San Miguel de Allende

The history of San Miguel de Allende is a storied one full of tradition, honor and spirit. It played a pivotal role in the Mexican War of Independence and was the first municipality to be declared free of Spanish rule. An influx of notable artists in the 20th century helped turn it into the renowned arts destination that it is today. In 2008, San Miguel de Allende was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its well-preserved Spanish Colonial architecture and historical significance. In 2010, Travel + Leisure named it one of the "World's Best Cities" and it also made Condé Nast Traveler's "Reader's Choice Awards." Travel to San Miguel de Allende is a favorite with United States and Canadian residents. Many who visit end up living in San Miguel; approximately 20% of the town's 70,000 residents are expatriates, mostly from the U.S. & Canada.
